Default Best Exhaust System?

I recently bought another SC and I was wondering which exhaust systems sound the best. Also, after looking online for awhile I couldn't find any catback exhaust systems for the SC just axlebacks... Would I be better off going to a shop for custom piping and just buying an axleback online? I'm pretty sure it won't add much but about how much HP if any does a exhaust system add on average?

It all depends on what you think sounds good.

Power? Also variable. N/A on a 300 you may pick up 5rwhp. On a boosted single turbo cammed monster you can pick up 100rwhp.

Not all mufflers are created equal. Some flow very poorly (Flowmaster and such). Some flow vitrually as well as a straight pipe. (Hooker Maxflows)

I have a catback from Phoenix Power/ Fukui. Apparently super rare in the US, sounds perfect to me, not loud but not quiet when driving.

^ agree with both above posters.
There is no bolt-on full exhaust for SC's (aside from axelbacks), you pretty much have to research and do a custom job. It also depends on 300 or 400? Year may impact your decisions (if its vvt-i or not). There's a whole sticky'd thread dedicated to just exhaust systems.

As for my exhaust, its a full custom header back exhaust with Tanabe Medalion axelbacks and PPE headers (with a lot of work in between). My '99 SC400 dyno's at 270whp with just this exhaust and an ebay BFI (stock dyno for vvt-i SC's is 215-220whp), so I gained quite a bit of NA power with just a well thought-out exhaust

If I wanted to stay simple and not have a custom piping job done, what's the best axle back system as far as performance and bang for the buck?

Question

Another noobie question... I don't know many shops around my area that do exhaust work.. Would Meineke be able to install an axleback system? Im not sure of what they do exactly or the quality of their work.. Thanks

The performance variable is so minimum I wouldn't be too concerned. How it looks/sounds is the only reason to change out your exhaust if you're NA. The $ per hp just doesn't make sense.

Cheap but stylish - Magnaflow.

^ as Dx3 said, you're not going to get any HP gains from just an axel back, its more just for sound and looks.

As for installation, you should be able to get it in there yourself. Most axel back are just bolt-on ..unscrew a few screws, remove old mufflers, install new exhaust and tighten screws. Done.
