Alright,so the other day on my way to work,I stopped at a redlight & smelled something hot. Got out,looked under my car & my cats were glowing red. Sooo,definitely need to change those out soon before I have to do emissions. What would be the best replacement cats for my 92 SC400??

Best would be oem, but you could upgrade to hi-flow cats if you'd like.

Glowing red hot cats would mean there is unburned fuel entering the exhaust system. If you replace the cats and nothing else, you will probably get the "glowing" cats again and they will need replacing.

Unless you wanted to get into welding, OEM cats are the way to go. Universal Auto Zone cats are a pain to work with.

and i just sent my oem cats from my sc400 in to be recycled...

go to a muffler shop and have them welded out and replaced with straight pipes if you dont have emissions. Then send the three old cats in and get about 150$ back.

So your not curious as to why your cats are glowing, thats not a normal sign for a cat, thats usually a sign you have a failed coilpack and are running on 4 cylinders. the unburnt fuel will get in the cats and light them up and then they don't work anymore, but if you don't fix the problem... all that money spent on new cats will only get you past this e-test and thats a big maybe if you are running on 4 only, and either way soon the cats will be dead again. I would look into fixing the problem first while the dead cats are still on.

So what's a solution for someone who still has to worry about emissions? New OEM cats from Lexus even with the CL discount is still $1200 each. Are there bolt on high flow cats out there that will last longer than one year? Rockauto has cheap replacement cats, but supposedly they don't last very long.

I too had glowing cats, but I also had a failed coilpack. I replaced every single ignition component with OEM stuff from Lexus. Still have an issue keeping the car from starting unless my foot is on the gas. I'm running on a spare ECU with one leaky capacitor, mine is getting rebuilt by AutoECU right now. Either way, I know I need to replace my cats as the car has been running super rich due to O2 codes for over a year now (O2 codes have been blamed on faulty ECU since my O2 sensors are new, and possible bad cats already). I removed the cats already. Just need replacements now.

there are no cheap replacements as good as factory really, unless you can pick up a good used set that has life left in it which may be a hunt in itself. I use magnaflow cats when replacement time comes around, they don't last as long as stock, but you could technically replace them every 2-4 years and come out ahead when the stockers cost 1200 each. they are usually ~$70 online a piece plus maybe an hour labor installation for both of them.

that's the california one which is more expensive I think, if you are in texas you can get the regular kind.
as for bolt on it says that but I have no idea if it is or not, I have never used those before I usually get the universal and weld it in to the midpipe but I have a 300, since you have a 400 you have more cats and the factory ones are close to the exhaust manifold.

I have a pair of cats off of my 93 SC400. They have about 70,000 miles on them and are in great condition. I had to change them out when I installed headers. They wouldn't bolt up. Let me know if you want them.

IF you actually do need new cats you could do worse than going with a Catco OEM-spec replacement. Them offer bolt-in front and rear replacements for SC300's. Not sure about SC400's. They also make Cali-spec replacements for those who need them.
