Default Is an inexpensive ebay Timing Belt/W Pump kit OK?

Greetings,
I found a Toyota dealership that offered to do my timing belt, water pump, tuneup labor for 500$. That is so much less then I had previously heard in NYC so i am gathering the parts for the job now.

Are the inexpensive ebay timing belt kits http://www.ebay.com/itm/90-97-4-0L-Lexus-LS400-SC400-Timing-Belt-Water-Pump-Kit-/360373765435?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1995%7CModel%3ASC400&hash=item53e7f3453b&vxp=mtr any different then the more expensive ones?

Will this do? Is there a smarter, better option? Is everything I need included?

?

That should work, but I'm an OEM guy.

For belts, i'd go with Mitsoboshi/Bando, tensioners like NTN, bearings like Koyo, water pump like Aisin.

That ebay stuff should be good though.

I saw kits mentioning those names for not too much more. I will reconsider those.
Thank You

Thumbs up

I found all OEM for 100$ more. Not too bad for the additional confidence.
Thank You!

This thread helped me a lot.

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-...elt-parts.html

I ended getting the belt from Lexus. Then bought the pump, tensioner, etc separately.

I am in the process of doing mine now. I have a friend at a performance shop that recommended the gates kit to me. 150 or 175 shipped depending on water pump

At least get the timing belt from Lexus/ Toyota.

I had belts from other brands on my other car... snapped at 40k miles..... I trust dealer parts. Worth the money.

Check Rockauto.com they got a good selection for you. For $180 you get 1 Belt, 1 Tensioner, 1 Hydraulic Tensioner, 1 Idler, and 1 Water Pump.

Thanks Biddles!
I was leaning towards THIS KIT so far as it has everything, It's OEM and the price is nice.
I will look at Rockauto now!

I'll go check them now. If I get the belt from Lexus, would that not be the Mitsuboshi?

They list these brands, are they really OEM?
AISIN Water Pump, KOYO Idler Bearing, NSK Tensioner Bearing, NTN Hydraulic Tensioner, Mitsuboshi Timing Belt,2 KP/Stone Cam Seals,KP/Stone Front Crank Seal.
for 239$

Oh the brand was from Pepboys, I went cheap.... and got something cheap. I forgot what brand. I trust genuine Toyota/Lexus parts a lot more after that. Especially when the first timing belt last more than 230k.

On internal components that require a great deal of labor to replace, its generally not worth it to use anything but the best.

Some exceptions include, for example, the radiator. An oem radiator is VERY expensive and doesnt seem to do the job better than aftermarket, and if it needs replacement, its a half-hour job.

My instincts leaned in this direction, just wanted to make sure I was not wasting money.
