Smile Take a look at my frayed timing belt.

I am going to change it next weekend. What could be the cause of this? I am thinking the timing belt guide by the balancer pulley is rubbing on the side of the belt. What do you think?

Timing belt was last changed at 90K miles. Mileage on my SC is now 175K miles.

It almost looks like it's being pinched between some parts. It's a pretty consistent pattern.

Your tensioner is bad. Thats usually a sign of it. Make sure you replace it.

In fact, I'd replace all of the pulleys while you're at it, if they haven't been replaced recently. Good idea, get that timing belt replaced ASAP...don't want bent valves...

That depends on the year. If it is not a VVTi engine then it's not an interference engine and a snapped timing belt will not crash the valves.

I think you are wrong, as far as I know the 1uz's that were in the 95-97 ls400's were interference and they were not vvti. They bumped up the compression from 10:1 to 10.4:1 and were now interference. I think the sc400 saw these changes too. Better be safe than sorry.

Correct, according to something I read about the 1UZ in the LS, 1995 to 1997 had a redesigned head which now made the motor interference.

If you recently changed your crank pulley and use a pry back to pry it off you could have bent the washer and that could have hit your timing belt and chewed it up. Talking from previous experience.
