Fuel Leak
Ok I posted In the Performance & maintenance section of this forum but no one has replied in days. I have a fuel leak that occurs after I have been driving for a while. It seems to be coming from the bottom of the charcoal canister. The problem is that someone cut the metal line and replaced it with a rubber hose. When I found the leak the hose was ruptured, so I replaced the hose. Here is the kicker: The hose leads to nowhere. I have some pictures that show some fuel line diagrams, but the are not very conclusive pictures. I will post them just incase someone knows where i should hook this hose. The red arrow points to where the rubber hose i attached.

Full as in full of gasoline? or full as in it has filter all that it can filter. And on another note, are these supposed to have gasoline going through them? I thought they filtered hydrocarbons for emissions purposes... Thanks for someone finally replying though.

I have a 92 sc 400 with the same problem. The canister is supposed to purge the fuel tank of vapors. The VSV will apply vacuum as determined by the ECU, and those vapors will be drawn into the intake to be consumed. Like you I cannot determine if the canister is at fault or maybe the plumbing somewhere. When I drive with the fuel cap off, the car runs fine and it does not leak. There is a test procedure to check the canister in the service reference manual. According the to this test mine tests good. Not sure if I should replace the canister with an autozone one (despite passing the test) and modify to fit. The other option is to run a gas cap that vents externally. Sorry, wish I could be of more help.

BTW as you can see from the diagram there are two hoses that exit the bottom of the canister. One is to the check valve and the other one works its way around the engine environment to where it vents in the center of the front crossmenber. I guess they did this in case it leaks like ours does and will drip fuel in the least dangerous spot.

Ok so there should be no hose attached to it. That also does explain a little bit. I did buy this car recently, and it did not have a gas cap on it. I recently got one from another sc400 from a picknpull. I will drive around for a few days with no gas cap and report back. Thank you for the opinion! I really hope that solves the problem.

No there is a hose attached to it. This hose works its way around the engine compartment and ends up somewhere around the front crossmember. However, I dont see what is wrong with letting it drain where you have it. I do not routinely drive around with the gas cap off, but since I cant figure out the issue I think my next step is to buy a self venting gas cap or worse...drill a small hole in the middle of my cap.

I am a delivery driver, so today while at work I will try driving with no gas cap. Since that is the only thing that I have done to the car since I have had it, hopefully that will solve it. I will report back.
