sounds like top end, but if you were to do the coilpack trick and it were to go away, then we would start looking elsewhere. if you did the coil trick and nothing changed, we would still think it is in the top end.

^^^ Oil was the first susupect since the old owner told me the car sat for months on the driveway but that wasnt it. Also did the coil pack thing today but nope, still ticks. So I guess Ill check valve clearance next week.

Checked the clearance today, I found two on the intake side that were >0.010in and then 2 on exhaust side that were too tight <0.010in. Hopefully I can get away with just swapping them. The ticking sound louder on the intake so I am those 2 that are out of spec are the culprit.

Old owner was saying that 3 angle job was done to the head. I cant tell wheather thats true or not, but if it is means somebody may have accidentally put them in the wrong place. Shims that were out of spec are right accross from each other. All were # 4 cylinder, intake was loose and exhaust was tight.

Yup, I've been looking for the sst shim remover but I'm gonna have to order it online. My friend works as service tech at toyota and he Said they don't carry it. I checked auto zone, freight harbor and some local auto parts supply and they dont have either. Any of you guys from LA area wanna let me barrow your sst for a day? Lol

yeah you dont need an sst to remove the shim, a small screwdriver or even a small blade on a pocket knife will do the trick.

Swapped the shims and the ticking moved with the shim. Lol its on the exhaust side now. I guess I have to get a micrometer and figure out what size to order.

Get a piece of paper and number the page E 1-12 and I 1-12 pick up a complete feeler gauge set starting from the front of the motor run a feeler gauge under the cam between the camshaft and the bucket when the valve is not open and write down the feeler gauge size on each bucket after doing all bucket (shim) measurements on both cams then compare, then consult TSRM for shim specs, and start playing the shell game withe the buckets till they are all in spec. you can also take a sharpie and write on the edge of the head when you start making the changes to keep you in check.

Hope this helps. GL
