Default Low rpm grinding/whirring noise

Every time I fix one thing on my car, something else breaks!

My car has what sounds like a loud power steering pump. It's loudest between idle and 1k rpm, and then tapers off. The noise does not change while steering. It can't be heard (yet) while driving. I can't localize where the sound is coming from so I'm just guessing at its source. The car was perfect when I parked at a restaurant, then it made noise when I cranked it again to leave.

There were no bubbles in the PS or fan reservoirs and there are no visible leaks under the car. I pumped out all the PS and fan fluid anyway and replaced it with fresh ATF. The noise continues, and I really hope it isn't the water pump. What is a cheap 30 minute fix on a domestic V8 is a major undertaking on these things.

Transmission fluid looks good, engine coolant is good. I wish I had a way to upload a recording of it but right now I do not. I'd love to hear some other items I could check.

Sounds like your starter gear is staying out.
If its a high pitch "whirring"

Possibly carrier bearing or driveshaft also I'd say. But I'm.with one of these options here.

I'm going to test it with the serpentine belt removed. If the noise is still present at least I know it isn't an accessory and is possibly more serious.

I'd love it to be the torque converter. I need a rear main seal anyway so that's an easy "forced upgrade opportunity".
