Final answer: Speed sensor from auto to w58?
I have searched this one into the dirt and have yet to find a definitive answer, so lets put it here.
I'm swapping from auto to W58 in an SC300 and the W58 did not come with a VSS. Can I swap the stock auto VSS into the W58 box?
I will know this for sure shortly, as I will be able to just try it and see, but at any rate, I think it needs to be archived here for the benefit of the community
PS, if this has already been addressed, please link the thread. I could only find a couple threads where people were asking, and a couple posts that said they "thought" that it would work.

The one I saw on their website for like $59.95 doesn't look like it will work to me. There is no driven gear on it that I can see. How the heck is it supposed to work?
It looks more like an adapter to convert different types of setups to electronic. Ours already sends an electronic signal to the speedo, so I don't think it applies to us. Now I am referring to the W58/A340E here, and the r154 I assume is different...?

WHATEVER YOU DO.... DONOT DRIVE THAT CAR WITHOUT THAT SPEED SENSOR INSTALLED!!!!!
It DOES need it and and ou need to fill that tranny with 75/90 Gear Lube!! Fill hole is on the driver side of transmission and you need to fill it until it starts spilling out of the fill hole when tranny is level. If you fill it without that speed sensor, it will just spill out because the sensor hole is lower than the filler.

Ha. You had me going too. FYI, Marlin Crawler can sell anyone the original Toyota speed sensor for W58 or R154 but it's about $220-$260. The cheaper VSS convertor is only for old gear-drive units in the older W58/R154 boxes. If you don't have anything in there then it's best to get the newer Toyota OEM sensor.
