I always use OEM specs on the 1st and 3rd ring.

On the 2nd ring, I like to go .002" tighter. This helps with the sealing under vacuum.

If you use Aftermarket Forged piston like JE or ROSS, they come with a spreadsheet on how much to gap your rings based on the power it will be making.

Is this a factory fresh block, or a used one that has just been honed? If it's used, drop a few rings in and measure the gaps. I think you may be surprised.

Does the same sizing apply to me if I'm using a GE block with a GTE head?
I'm hoping to hit 500-600 rwhp range.

its a used block with with a fresh re-hone . machinist told me to use standard size rings. when i threw the rings :

1: 1st 0.020 2nd 0.022
2: 1st 0.020 2nd 0.020
3: 1st 0.020 2nd 0.022
4: 1st 0.019 2nd 0.022
5: 1st 0.020 2nd 0.022
6: 1st 0.022 2nd 0.022-23

these are NPR rings from driftmotion, i havent filed them or anything. does those numbers look right?

i think ge and gte are the same, only differences is the oil squirter. but u should check your bore size

Just as I thought. Since you have a seasoned block, you are outside of spec on them already. Even so, you are still within the service limits. Did you turn a piston upside-down and push the rings a couple inches down the bore and square them?

Spec for top ring is: (0.0118 - 0.0157) Service Limit: (0.0394)
Second ring: (0.0138 - 0.0178) Service Limit: (0.0413)
Oil ring: (0.0051 - 0.0150) Service Limit: (0.0386)

I wonder what your piston to wall clearance is?

They do have the same bore size, I just wasn't sure if the GTE pistons were different.

i believe its the stock bore.. what do u recommend the gap to be at? my other set of piston rings are 0.018 and 0.019 across the board...

I recommend the stock gaps I posted above, but you are already beyond them. By other set, do you mean your used stock rings? It is interesting that they have smaller gaps. Do they have carbon buildup on the ends, making the gaps just seem smaller?

Which rings went to .016? Did your machine shop check for taper? Ideally, you have minimal taper in the bores. A .004-.006 change in gap within the stroke range of the bore seems like quite a bit to me. It is recommended to push the rings down halfway so the piston used to square them is fully into the bore, and "square" itself.
