Default Calling all JZ Pros!!

My buddy has a 93 sc300 with a 1JZ and T66 single. Recently he has been having a few problems with his car. First off, he was having a problem in which his idle randomly started to sit at different places. Second every time he hits the clutch the rpms drop like crazy!!! Even when driving every time he hits the clutch to switch gears the rpms drop and basically will turn the car off if he doesnt give it some gas. The car also loses electricity fast and he is finding himself jumping his car to start it more than often. Its has a new battery and the alternator isnt that old either. Problems do get worse once the car warms up.

The car is set up with an SAFC I and used to run perfect. He changed the IACV thinking that might be the problem, it made the idle a lot better but still basically same issue.

Another problem that has surfaced recently is the motor sounds like it is ticking or more like knocking, only at certain rpms. It sounds fine until he revs it up to 2500rpm, and the knocking sound comes alive. We tried to listen and see where the sound is coming from thinking maybe just a lifter is ticking and in all honesty it sounds like its coming from the block.

But once again the weird thing is it only makes a sound at 2500 rpm and up sounds like the sound originates from the block. We are hoping for the best but expecting the worst and considering swapping his engine for another 1JZ.

A local guy has a 1JZ VVT-I but we dont know how hard it would be or possible to use the non-vvti harness and ecu....... Tried searching around but seems like its hard to find info on Non-VVT-I to VVT-I

ANYONE?

I used to have a VVT-I and when I installed the 264/264 cams I believe it negated the VVT-I, so I don't think it will be a problem.

Sounds like crankwalk. VVT-I is an involved swap as far as wiring goes. I would just 1.5 it or swap in a new 1JZ.

sounds like crankwalk and once a 1jz has been driven with crankwalk shortly thereafter spun bearing hence rod knock.. last month i just fixed a mk3 on a 1jz who crank walked the motor .. you should see what the thrust bearing/washer looked like .. they were smashed and sitting at the bottom of the oil pan

Mine did that noise when I had rod bearing failure. I was stupid and let the car get low on oil. I fixed by getting another 2JZ GE block. The idle issue sounds like a boost leak which may be throwing off the AFC.
