Default I blocked the EGR with a soda can!

I blocked the EGR with a soda can!

first i made a paper template with a piece of paper and the EGR valve, then i went on to cut the plate and drilled holes for the bolts.

then with red high temperature silicone, i sealed it!

Now, the exhaust gases passing through this system aren't high pressure so the thin aluminum from the can will hold up flawless.

Here is how it looks:

Why would you even put the egr thing back on? The main purpose is to get rid of that pos piece of metal. All you had to do is get a 1/4" block off plate, drill holes and youre done.

Wrong. The main purpose id to block off the EGR gases from recirculating into the system and keep the internals cleaner.

Hey, whatever works. Don't feel bad. Back in my younger days, I used a pecan to block a thermactor pump hose for diagnostics LOL. Hey, it was the only thing handy with the correct OD. My dad STILL rags on me for that piece of backyard ingenuity.

Ifigured it was the simplest way to do it! Afterall, some gasket sheets are usually made of aluminum coated with polytetrafluoroethylene. and theyre around the similar thickness of an aluminum can! so hey! why not? (source: im an engineering major at FGCU)

I once blocked off EGR on a 3000gt/stealth the same way. Why spend $XX on "blockoff plates" when you can just make a "gasket" with no hole in it for free. Sure it's nice to be able to remove the EGR valve completely but you get all the performance gains by simply obstructing the hole.

On that note, is the EGR on these cars known to fail in some way? I have never heard of "gains" from deleting a working EGR, only drawbacks.

It is known to clog over time from carbon deposits. the EGR is only supposed to help with emmisions by lowering the amount of nitric oxide produced. so when blocking the exhaust gases from recirculating, you actually run cleaner.and as i mentioned early, It keeps the internals clean and free from that nasty black buildup on the manifold.

If this mod keeps the black nasty build up in the manifold from happening then I think I'll do it.

Eh take it easy on him. I think we should encourage any DIY effort that works and advances the knowledge of a platform. While many are happy dishing out money for a fancy looking hardware and dumping boatloads of money into shops, there are many others who enjoy having a car built by themselves from scratch.

Is it ghetto? Eh kinda.
However, it's built and not bought so thats a from me.
