Default Please Help Engine sounding very choppy and heavy smoke

i have a 92 sc400 it has about 240,000 miles on it and just now when i went out to my car to start it up it started up very weak and sounded sort of like a tractor very low exhaust note and choppy followed by a very strong fuel smell coming form the exhaust..i let it idle for about 5 mins and then i drove it down to street to the front of my neighborhood and then the engine started smoking (smelled sort of like oil burning) as well as in the car..after i shut the car off for a few mins the smoke was gone and no signs of leaks under the car but the exhaust on the passenger side close to the engine is where the smoke is coming from and it looks like something is leaking on the that part of the exhaust is causing it to smoke.. also found out it only starts smoking when i give it gas but while in idle theres no smoking problem but the exhaust still sounds very choppy

Thanks again and please help if you can

the smoke is a very light white and only is coming from the passanger side of the car it looks as if oil is dropping the the cat and is burning off causing it?

Merged your 2 threads, its easier to help when we can see everything in one place.

you could have a bad coilpack that went out and now a bunch of gas is getting burnt up in the exhaust.
check coilpacks and rotors, its one of the more common problems on a sc400 when people describe it as running rough. that usually means you aren't firing on all 8.

I FOUND THE PROBLEM IT WAS......THE Ignition Coil Was bad Coil #1 SO after 3 days of changing my valve cover gaskets ,replacing the spark plugs and wires as well as cleaning the entire Throttle Body. the next morning i did more research and searched more threads and thankfully i found the answer to my problem.

Thanks again to everyone who helped and a BIG thanks to ClubLexus

yeah, those coils always seem to go out eventually, seems to be more common on the sc400 than the sc300 for some reason.
you may be replacing the other one soon, but now you know what to look for.

Great. I was going to tell you to look at your valve cover because that is what was leaking oil on my cat. Converter
