Default to Silicone valve cover gaskets, or not to silicone valve cover gaskets?

....that is the question.

couldn't find a direct answer to this, so... i need to change my V/C gaskets so i bought new rubber gaskets and i also bought some RTV hi temp black Silicone. I've never changed the V/C on my SC before....so do i need this silicone, or is just installing the rubber gaskets into the covers enough? I didnt see any silicone on them when i removed the covers, which makes me curious.

i bought the Felpro brand from Auto Zone. Has anyone had problem with these? should i exchange them for the OEM ones?

also, bought a Felpro throttle body gaskets(which look hella flimsy compared to the metal oem ones) are these ok or should i ditch them for some oem ones from the stealership?

thanks doods

When I replaced my gaskets I used the same ones you did. They are holding up fine so far. Did them about a year ago. I also put the silicone on too. You only need a dab on each corner in the front right next to where it curves up.

Nope. I didn't use that one. Actually now that I think about it I don't remember there being a gasket in the plug area. But yeah, my felpro gaskets came with one for it too.

There are some pretty tight oil paths at the corners. I would not put silicone there. In fact, I would not apply silicone at all. If you do, I think you should stay away from the front corners.

I'm not sure the GE is any different than the GTE, but on the GTE, you are supposed to put a little dap of sealer ONLY in the front corners where the front cam caps meet the head. Per the FSRM.

I wouldn't take the risk of RTV silicone getting in the head. The oem gasket alone has fixed my valve cover leaks.

Biggest mistake is to use silicone on rubber gasket. It has the potential to leak. If your rubber gasket falls off when you flip your valve cover upright, you should use copper spray, not silicone.

you can buy this at your local auto parts stores.
