Default K&N Air Filters

I was told adding a K&N Filter is a relativly easy and cheap HP upgrade. All i have to do is swap out my stock filter for a K&N? I searched around and wasnt sure what a good price is? 50.00 sound right?

Hey Shines34,

I read some of your posts...and for the most part, people have asked and gotten some type of response in the past. I would do a search for K&N or Exclusive for the body kit. You will find what you want quicker.

Also... you may want to read all the info about the K&N style filter replacements versus other upgrades. I would be the first to say that the K&N will NOT give you a noticeable HP change.

I have a K&N filter surrounded by a cold air box and a ram air scoop. I spent quite a bit of money building it all myself and I'll be the first to admit it doesn't do much. The stock air box is pretty effective by itself. If anything remove the snorkel piece and you'll get better air flow and more noise, but the engine itself gets PLENTY of air flow with the stock setup. Those rumors of an instant 30hps boost with a K&N is true of poorly designed cars, but not a Lex .

I found that by rounding the surfaces that oppose the flow of air around the inlet of the MAF,that throttle response is greatly improved, along with driveability, low end torque.
There's a couple places that cause turbulence;the vane between the idle-bypass channel, and the retainer for the screen. The vane was smoothed with a file, the ring was removed.

Does the TRD need re-oiling? It maybe manufactured from a different company so, the filtering qualities maybe different. I am using an Amsoil foam filter right now.

It is okay. I put it in when, I changed out my spark plugs and noticed a performance difference. However, I don't think it was the filter alone. I have no problems with the filter. You have to re-oil the filter much like the K&N. It is somewhat like the pop-in version of that Dragon filter/intake. I am guessing. It was around $33. You can order it directly from Amsoil along with the roiling kit.

Yes lex400sc is right, the stock box is actually quite effective. If you know how airflow works and intake systems work, you can look at it and you'd know this right away.

It would take quite a bit of work to improve on this.

I have the K&N cone filter on my SC3. The only improvment is with throttle response and a lil louder engine noise.

The TRD drop in filters muct be re-oiled just like the K&N filters. To be honest, they are basically the same. (I have the TRD filter in the GS)

I noticed the biggest performance difference AFTER I took my K&N out and put the stock back in. (90' LS400)

Todd helped me on this one, but the K&N's location and airflow was giving the MAF weird readings and the car was running like crap.

Thumbs down

I felt no difference...The Car was slightly louder and Kills more gas than usual...lol...Thats probably telling me that the engine is getting less air now with the K&N. I experience a slight engine lag now since I got it...I say stock is best...

But hey...like a ricer...I would have to say...It looks nice and fast...haha
