Question Can 2jz twins replace 1jz twins?

Hey whats up CL,

I have a question for all you 2jz and 1jz guys out there. I currently have a 1jz r154 swap in my 97 sc300. One of my turbos has gone bad with my 1jz twins.

Would I be able to swap out my 1jz twins and replace with jdm 2jz twins?

Please provide as much info and knowledge you have or if any of you have done or tried this before.

Thanks,

-GP

From what I hear, they have different flanges and you would have to use an adapter to get it to even bolt up to the manifold. Then you would have to make everything else fit, ie cold side piping, feeds/drains.... I don't think it is easily doable.

I usually try to google stuff like this, you'd be surprised how little technical information you'll find here. Do this - google "replace 1jz twins" and then click the first link. It was good read, not sure if they want links to the "other forum"

thanks that was a pretty good read. So it looks like it is possible but a lot of work is needed to modify them and need to sets of 2jz twin front turbos for this.

^ yeah, likely not worth it. Single will be easier and will overall simplify your engine

agreed

although modding the flange is simple, the problem is boost control. You need 2 front 2JZ turbos (these ones have wastegates, the rear ones don't). All the one's ive seen use the original setup, but the rear one doesn't have a wastegate. It looks like it does from the outside, but it really has an exhaust bypass valve. bottom line: it CAN be done, but you'd be better off getting a single instead.

Ok, so since its looking like this is not the best option. ( I was going to use the 2jz and get them fitted with gt28 wheels, but seems like this is two much work and no one seems to have a set of 1jz the want to sell.

My next question would be what are the necessary items needed to go single and would i have to upgrade my ecu any?

If it were me and I was on a tight budget, I would buy a Driftmotion single kit, some Aristo 440 injectors, and maybe a safc to tweak it a bit. That is probably the cheapest way to go single unless you buy a bunch of used parts. At the cheapest, you are probably looking at between 1800 and 2k to go single.

Yeah, going single isn't cheap. The Driftmotion kit is one of the cheaper routes to go too. Do it with well known brands and you can have close to that amount in just the turbo.

Keep an eye out man, you will find some 1jz twins eventually. I see them pop up all the time on SF and here too. Sucky situation in that you can wait and spend 150-200 on 1jz twins, or pay big money now to go single.

I dont know what kind of shape my Aristo twins are in, but I am immediately starting to collect my single conversion parts so when they do go I am not down for long. Even if you do find some replacement twins, I would advise you do the same.

im in the same boat right now, but what sucks is it's really hard to find even a decent set of twins. It requires a lot of time and patience to find em, but they're out there.
