new car need a little help

ok i got myself a 95 sc300 5speed in a trade on sunday and the engine light is now on but not noticing anything, iv gone to shucks and used ther code scanner but it says unable to read system. is ther a way to get the lights in the dash to blink to check the codes? my jeep does but jw if our cars do? i dont wanna goto the stealership lol really wanna get this fixed
