Default Help, timing belt idler bolt is loose

Doing timing belt on my '97 2JZGE and upon reinstallation of the idler the bolt is loose or the aluminum thread ( oil pump assy. ) where it should go is stripped.

The idler has play, not the pulley/bearing, it is the base where the bolt goes. I am sure it is not tight enough because the thread is strip, also I can't torque it to 25 ft.lbs ( or whatever TQ spec ), the bolt keeps moving upon tightening.

I think the previous owner or mechanic tightened it too much, that's why it is stripped. By the way I saw stripped aluminum on that hole.

Question is, I have to get a new oil pump assembly right?

Here are the pictures:

Heli-coil it and you'll be fine. It's a stainless steel threaded insert and you'll never strip it out.

If it were me, I'd replace the whole assembly; simply because of the critical function that the belt tensioner has. It's true, a repair MAY hold up fine, but I'd breathe easier whenever I was pushing some high rpm's.

$.02

You are right, I only drive my car less than 3-4K rpm though.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Damn, I bought a kit and this Heli-Coil works! Torqued my idler at 25 ft. lbs.

Saved me time and money. Thanks for the help guys

funny thats the same problem that made my 1j car stall on in the middle of the road. except my harmonic dampener was contacting the actual bolt that held in the tensioner and bent it. But the heli-coil thing is terrific. looking forward to getting it done and getting the car back on the road again!
