I read somewhere that the USDM turbos will not bolt to the JDM exhaust manifold, but will the compressor side piping interchange? I just wonder if I need to buy ALL the piping both hot and cold side to upgrade, or if just the turbos and the exhaust manifold are all I need.

Yes, you can use the intake piping and vsv's. They are interchangeable.
