Default Seatbelt light staying on

Alright, so a few months ago my power steering pump started leaking real bad. At the time, my mechanic said to just keep refilling it and that it wouldn't hurt anything, until I could afford to replace it. I now know that all the fluid lands right on the alternator and toasts the thing. Some mornings, or when I haven't driven the car for most of the day, the battery light will come on and stay on for anywhere between 30 seconds and five minutes. I'm assuming it is the alternator, but my friend and I are gonna test it tomorrow and find out for sure. Lately though, my seatbelt light has been coming on, even though my seatbelt is plugged in. Is this another sign that my alternator is going out, or something else, or what???
