Knock sensor CEL triggers limp home mode to protect the engine. When it happened on mine, it was a huge loss of power, probably 50% or more. I'm glad I procrastinated on replacing the sensors to the tune of $700 (shop estimate, most of it being for the ~10 hrs of labor) on my SC400 while trying various things in hopes of it not being the sensor itself. Barring future KS flare-ups that would disprove the all but certain resolution, it ended up being the ECU was damaged at those input pins from capacitor leakage. The connection was almost completely corroded through and losing the signal from time to time. Everything else I was chasing down and trying to find a pattern to was just coincidence.

One of the first things I was told is bad gas (non-premium) can trigger the knock sensors. Running some fuel system treatment (Lucas, Techron, etc.) would be worth a try.

I didn't necessarily have the problems stated in the ECU thread, either. I bought the capacitors to do pre-emptive repair work, figuring they would begin leaking before long. It wasn't until the tech took the lower cap out down by the input terminals that the major damage was revealed.

Let me see if I can be more clear about it this time... The damage to my knock sensor (and O2 sensor) inputs to the ECU were entirely NOT visible until the faulty capacitor was removed from the board. Even the tech could not see the damage until the capacitor was out of the way. That whole area is hidden under the metal brace that makes up the outer casing. A visual inspection will do you absolutely no good in the off chance you have the same problem.

If you plan to keep the car for any length of time and don't know for a fact that your ECU has already had the capacitors replaced, I would start there since they'll probably be bad before long if not already. You might get lucky and also solve the knock sensor problem in the process.
