Question RE: Tranny on SC400
Hello from the new kid on this block!
This is my first question of many to come, as I just purchased an immaculate 1992 SC400.
My question is this:
What can I do to stop the shuddering that I experience from the auto tranny when I am running about 55 mph and gently push on the gas. It sounds like the car is going over "speed strips" with a heavy vibration as the lock-up converter seems to be disengaging.
Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated... as this seems to be the only problem with the vehicle.
Thanks!!

change your transmission fluid. Use Type-IV toyota fluid. You're experiancing it because that's around the speed that your torque converter locks up. I had the same thing. My fluid was burnt. I changed the fluid
(14mm drain bolt after the engine oil 14mm drain bolt on the underside)
Swap that fluid out and you'll shift allot better.
Toyota T-IV ATF fluid only
part number: 08886-01705
The 4L can is either gonna be black (new style)
or white.

SupraCoup3- that's an interesting picture of the underside of an SC
...how was that taken?
It looks like a composite pic- is it of your car?

that's an undercarrige pic of UZZ32's ride -- it's an Aussie/ Japanese spec Soarer w/ custom exaust. It's a useful pic when you're trying to visualize the underside of your ride!

Before Sending money on a T/C or Tranny. Have someone check the Driveshaft and Driveshaft Center SUpport Bearing. I had the same problems and I replaced the Tranny and T/C to find out that it was the Driveshaft the whole time!!! I went to www.car-parts.com and found about 200 of them for sale.

The shudering you are feeling is probably not the Lock up on your T/C its probably your U-joint in your driveshaft has froze up and wore your Center support bearing away. When you push the gas it causes the Driveshaft to hit the bearing edge. There is no way to tell if the driveshaft u-joint is bad unless it is removed from the vehicle and twisted in different directions. Check for fliud leakage and to see if it spins freely throught the Center Support Bearing.
