SC 300 Rusted Gas Tank
New member 2nd post... picked up a "free" SC300 about a month ago... been sitting outside for at least 6 years. Good news: engine compression (cold) is great 195-205 PSI. Full tuneup, timing belt, battery, etc. Engine did not start. Why? tank is rusted rusted rusted. Pulled the sending unit and pump... rusted solid. I know that these can be bought new or refurbished. But the tank has a ring of rust in the upper 1/2. Any ideas on how to clean/de-rust tank or will I be forced to buy a new/junkyard one? Thanks.
Steve
As my wife smugly asks: how much does FREE cost? I have 400 in parts already, plus 400 for new tires! Now a gas tank then ???. I hate it when she's right!

you could recondition it with one of those motorcycle gas tank kits.....you have to pull the tank, empty whatever's in it....mix the stuff from the kit and put a bunch of steel shot (think bearings, large BB's) in the tank and shake the **** out of it.....the kits are three step...the stuff you put in with the steel shot is acidic and helps eat away at the rust while the shot breaks up all the big stuff....next you drain that out and flush it with water (yes water) and add the 2nd "stage" which is a prep agent for stage 3, which is a sealer/rust preventer that actually makes a thin bladder covering the entire inside of the tank with a rubberish coating...iirc the kits cost about $80 and while that's a little high, it's prob still cheap than finding another fuel tank. Just an option....

Come on ....how successful are most of us with RUST ?
Its a heck of a job to thoroughly deal with RUST when its accessible ....... do you really think you are going to permanently address it inside a tank ?
Go with a fresh tank that is unrusted....and for your wife, hey, you are not spending your $$ on strip clubs or getting into trouble..... she is lucky you are so industrious
Man gotta have his toys!!!!
Enjoy!!!
