Default resonator location?

hi fellas, I just did a custom cat-back exhaust, no resonator. It turns out to be too loud for my taste, so I am going to put back a aftermarket resonator but the question is, the size of the resonator and the location of it. I would assume a large diameter resonator will kill less sound because of most flow compare it to the smaller one. What about the location? Like, if i put it near the cat, would it sound more raspy? or should I put the resonator near the end of the exhaust? Any suggestion? Thanks.
