Exclamation Loose Steering

I have this problem with an SC of mine. It's way too loose, my other SC's never felt like that. It takes a good 1/4 Turn each way for the car to respond. (If I'm turning left then immidiately turning right it's about a half turn before the car's wheels turn)

I only drive it on weekends, but it's starting to get scary.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Nic

I know it's hard to diagnose on a forum, but I'd like to get opinions asap.

okay where do i start:

1. search...you should know better with 400 posts
2. daizen rack bushings...i made my own out of steel(makes car feel like a go-cart)
3. check front lower control arms bushings as well
4. post in the right sub-forum. there is a suspension/wheels/brakes forum for a reason. rack bushings is more suspension then performance. this subforum is more engine and drivetrain then anything else.

I did search. There's another thread entitled "Steering" I bumped with my question, but didnt get a response.

Sorry for the urgency, I'm one of those guys that likes to take care of problems asap.

My mistake about the incorrect sub-forum, the other steering question was in here so I posted it here. (I agreed with you, I thought it was more suspension oriented also)

Thanks for the starting point. If you have any recommend searches I can check I'd appreciate it. I couldn't find anything

Thanks again,
Nic

What 5sp_jzz30 said..the steering rack bushings should take care of that problem.

Have you checked the entire steering rack?

Sounds like the steering rack bushings, I had that issue, but mine was my actual steering rack was bad. But it wasn't as bad as yours sounds.

Offtopic: Hey 5sp, would be willing to make some more of those steel bushings?

i dont want to be a thread jacker.

oh well screw it. its related to the topic anyways and might give people ideas.

this is the "blueprints" i made in CAD. took like 20 mins. really easy.

there are two bushing on the driver side of the car. one vertical and one horizontal. i have not made the passenger side bushings yet. its been cold and im busy with school. i have til may and then i graduate college and hopefully be a mechanical engineer

this is the front bushing:

top bushing:

this is the front bushing installed in the rack:

one more:

i replaced the bolts too. the stock bolt had a shank that was thinner then the threads. this would cause the bolt and bushing to be really loose. i have specs on the bolt at home. i wanted to find a fine thread bolt just like stock but could not at the time. i put on a lock washer and lock nut. it never loosened on me yet in over a year.

he is the comparison. new bolt on top and stock bolt on the bottom:

i dont think ill be making them. last time i was going to make some and only charge people for material, the thread was erased because im not a vendor.

if i make them it would be for friends with SC's or locals.

I dont mind. It is somewhat related. Looked at the steering rack while I had someone turn the wheel. Steering rack moves, so I'm sure it's the bushings. Thanks again guys
