Default Looks like my W58 is toast.....what do you think?

Oh man! I think the W58 is on its last leg. Yesterday, I noticed at WOT in 3rd, 4th and 5th, the car shakes pretty violently as soon as boost hits. I have noticed on occassion that the RPMs were increasing while the shakes were goin on but I wasn't accelerating in sync with the RPMs. It doesn't happen on every pull, just occasionally. It almost feels like it is slipping. I can't get 1st or 2nd to get the shakes, no matter how hard I launch.

I've read that 3rd-5th tend to be the weakest link in the W58. My W58 has been whining for years. I think it's done.

The good thing is that I have an R154 chillin in the garage.

Yea, that's exactly why I went straight to the R154. It was a little more money, but at least I won't have to baby it at all.

The R154 is amazing. I had an early model Soarer R154 gone through by a local tranny guy about 4 years ago. He said the only wear on any of the parts was that 5th gear only had 80% life left!! 1st gear was perfect!

I was thinking. There is a possibility that my clutch is toast too. In first and second with open diff, traction is somewhat lacking. Third and beyond, no traction issues, just pure torque on the drivetrain. Hmmmm. What's your take?

i dunno man i'd take that trans off at look at the clutch first..

i've have at least 2 of my friends kill R154's in their mk3's. I think they are a step up for sure but they are far from impossible to destroy.

What condition is the driveshaft in? Vibration+slip could be 2 diff issues..tranny mounts & clutch or driveshaft & clutch, possibly input shaft on the tranny is taking a beating when the torque hits..

just keep beating it up since you got an r154 waiting. I had my w58 and blew it one month after i did my turbo setup. I then got a used r154 and blew it 1 1/2 months later. good luck

Sounds like a clutch issue to me, also. Maybe out of alignment, going bad from the slipping issue you described. Personally, I still love my W58, til it blows. Let's see what happens when I jump to a 400whp when I go single.

So I got to thinking. What if my engine is causing the hesitation that I'm experiencing? Maybe it's not the clutch/tranny bogging down but the engine that's bogging down at full boost.

My car runs hella rich and I've noticed over the last few months, it's gotten progressively worse. I pulled the plugs today and was inundated by fuel. The plugs were slimy from fuel residue.

I'm gonna get a new set of plugs (with .028 gap) and replace the O2 sensor. I'll let you know how it goes. Any idea what O2 sensor will work?

Check your clutch. A couple members at clubna-t have had their w58's be fine, but their clutch was trashed, but I guess that could go for any car with some horsepower.

As for the R154, these things are pretty simple to convert, and look to be pretty beefcake. We'll see how mine holds up.

Good point. I'll throw one of these in also. Are these pretty universal? I noticed that the part number for my UCF20 is the same as a 2JZ-GTE. I would assume the same for the 1JZ? Where is this sensor located on the 1JZ?

Shern, I'm not exactly sure where that sensor is, but my guess is that it's one of the 2 sensors above the water pump.

I'll try to find it today.

Complete R154 swap (done right) - $1000
New RPS Max Clutch kit - $800
Realizing you have a bad habit of resting your foot on the clutch pedal - Priceless

Man, what a revelation. That little bit of play before the clutch truly engages actually engages!

R154 still going in. Looking for clutch kits now.

Well I have complete faith in my W58. Hope with a new clutch kit to handle the power increase can put to sleep the W58 weakness controversy.
