Default HUGE loss of power

So I'm driving home tonight and am taking off from a light and I out of nowhere the car looses tons of power. i had to give it 3/4 throttle just to get up to 40. Im only about 5 minutes from home so I decided to just limp it back. It wasnt really running rough like it was missing or anything, water temp was fine and no check engine or any other indicators....but it did sound very weird. The exhaust note was very deep and muffled sounding with a sputter.

I get it home and it somehow idled but only at like 400 rpm. I shut it off as soon as I parked. Smelled something burning and a little smoke coming from out of the hood. I pop it and don't really see too much out of the norm. I get under the car and notice that the drivers side cat is GLOWING. Run around to the other side and same thing on the passenger cat.

Any ideas????

Thanks guys

Car is just shy of 200k......

Could it be your cats are clogged or something? If they haven't been replaced in 200k miles, might want to if that's what's contributing to your problem.

might be a misfire in one or more of the cylinders. unburnt gases can get into the cat and light it up. You probably will get a CEL if you drive it a few more times. Get to an Autozone and see if any codes are stored in the ECU

I would say it's a dead coil.

^^^ this happened to me too! the unburned fuel due to the failed coil/ignitors super heats the cats.

Having this exact problem since yesterday. What was the exact problem?

Edit: searching more has pointed it to bad ignition coil. Hopefully this is it.

had this issue on my sc3 but it was the timing being off. too much unburnt fuel not making power and burning cats.

What was your symptom?

Mine are:
- Very rough idle
- Absolutely dismal power
- Very rich exhaust fume
(all happened all of sudden)

I'm hoping to be able to narrow down the problem so i can have the right parts replaced.
