Default How much boost can stock 4.0 v8's handle?

this is for future reference.

I was just wondering how much boost our cars can handle safely for turbo's, not superchargers. i still want somewhat good gas mileage. I have a 92 sc400. just would like to know.

Peace out

You contradicted yourself. You are asking how much boost but then saying you want good gas mileage! You do know that boost uses more gas right?

Anyway this engine is "said" to handle 15lbs before the pistons burn. I cannot say that that is reliable figure, so try it and see. You can get engines cheap.

lol well i meant, like i can get better mileage with turbo lag, then i can wit a supercharger. anyone know how much gas mileage the v8 gets when running a turbo? and 15lbs? that's not bad. maybe i'll think about it more now.

Peace out

dude youre way in over your head if you ask this or make this kind of comments. maybe before you even do any research on how to turbo YOUR car you should read a couple of books so you know HOW forced induction works. and not learn it by "oh my buddy had an sti and he told me a few things"...i mean actually learn HOW everything works and why certain things work better then others. this will help you later on so you can have an intelligent conversation about the topic in the future.

read:
"maximum boost"- corky bell

"supercharged"- corky bell

"engineer to win"...actually all the books of that series. there is about 4 or 5 i think. read pretty much everything written by carroll smith. my boss was friends with him. great guy.

"forced induction performance tuning"- A graham bell

read at least half those book.

15psi would really be pushing it on the stock motor, the head gaskets at least. Not to mention your transmission would likely die after a few good boost runs.

That being said, I boost daily at about 9psi. I've seen as much as 12psi without the intercooler but never really tried it for daily driving.

The V8 is NOT easy to turbo, make sure you know what you are getting into before you start.

As far as Gas mileage with a supercharger its really not bad. Infact if you drive normal the change is barely if any noticiable. 6-7 pounds boost with no fuel upgrades makes for a really fun simple system that still passes the pumps.

15psi on a 16g is fine.... now 15psi on a gt47r will take you engine and transmission out in one pull.
