Default I have to give my car gas to start it!

About 50% of the time i have to start my car at 1/2 throttle. If I don't give the car gas it won't start, it'll stumble and die. This happens every other morning or so. On the mornings it doesn't do this it starts fine. I do have a check engine light for one of the oxygen sensors being bad could they be causing this. Also when i'm trying to start the car it smells like gas in the garage.

Im thinkn when you give it 1/2 throttle to start it, your actually giving it more air than the fuel you were assuming. Maybe your having a prob with your FPR giving too much fuel or your cold start injector, solenoid....whatever that thing is called, your having a prob with.

None the less, good luck!!

Start with addressing the problem causing the CEL and go from there.

The CEL is for a bad oxygen sensor according to the previous owner. i'm not sure which one it is, i'll have to take it in to get scanned. Do you think an O2 sensor could be the culprit.

I think you may be right about giving it more air instead of more fuel because I can definately smell gas when trying to start it.

Hey you need to fix that o2 sensor before doing anything else. You need to check your plugs and wires also cause if your not getting enough spark or there is a low spark condition that might not help. Does the check engine light blink? Cause you can also have a misfire code. See what the plugs look like and if they need to be changed.

start with the basics. also check for a loose maf intake hose or something. intake boots and or a intake leak. get soem carb cleaner and spray it down. also you could check yoru cold start injector if you have like stated above to see if its working

This sounds exactly like the problem i had in one of my cars.

For me the fuel pressure regulator went bad. I had to give it gas as well to get it running. Plus my car was running rich and right when it turned on, you could smell unburned gas plus see whitish smoke out of the exhust.

Oh btw that o2 sensor wont affect startup. You car runs without it until its warmed up. But a bad o2 sensor will give you worse mpg.

Ryeno is correct. o2 sensor won't be used until engine is warmed up. Definitly check what is that CEL code and go from there. Cars run rich on start up to safely warm up the engine until it is warn that is when o2 will come in play and it will adjust the injectors to fire the right amount of fuel there after.

My guess would be starting with the maf sensor, intake tubing for any leaks. Any vaccum hoses with cracks, vaccum leaks.

Thanks a lot guys. The CEL does not blink. But I will be doing all of theses maintenance things when funds allow. I appreciate all the help and new ideas.
