Default Oh so strange.... Fan clutch??

Yesterday I noticed that my fan would spin up real loud at low rpm from take off. From what Ive seen on other cars Ive owned first thing I though was bad fan clutch... But before I go out and replace the thing is there any definitive test to see if the fan clutch really is the cause of this? Like I said the fan is real loud from take off like its spinning too fast then once I get moving it quiets back down.

Also ... maybe unrealted but I get a hint of a funny almost propane-ish gassy weird like smell every once in a while while im driving in my car that I never had before. I did just have my transmission fluid changed over to redline 75w-90 and I was thinking that maybe it had something to do with that.. like I didnt put the rubber under boot back in properly under the shift boot when I replaced the shifter bushings... or could a bad fan clutch smell like that???

thanks for any insight..

Spin the fan, if there is resistance it maybe bad. It should spin with little to no resistance, yet not freely.
I just ordered on for my 92. See Algia @ R & J Dist on here, he will hook u up.

Thanks nate,
Any idea how difficult the fan clutch is to replace on the sc300? I am ordering one today as im pretty sure the bearing in mine has seized up.

4 nuts, and 4 screws that hold the fan to the fan clutch. Real easy and straight forward.

I was looking at mine, I think the hardest part will be removing the fan shroud. Once I get that off it should be easy. I got my part last week, just waiting for my day off to come.

Yeah the fan shrouds are cake. The bearing is seized up if it spins all the way when you push it. The part that seizes up is called the viscous clutch. The fluid inside it heats up and then creates drag on the bearing around it. Which in turn makes the fan move to cool the radiator. If the fluid goes bad or leaks out the effect is useless with in turn makes a lot of noise.

Finally installed my fan clutch. Oh the car is so much quieter. Took about an hour, could've been quicker but the Coronas kept calling my name. Had to remove the battery shelf and top radiator hose, but that was easy. While I was in there checked the condition of the timing belt which was pretty good but I will change it when I replace the water pump. I think I will start stocking parts for the 1jz. MVP and driftmotion has a whole section for 1jz parts.

You will replace the water pump and timing belt after your AA meting right? lol
You will have a couple Coronas all before that though. Good to hear that you vehicle is running smooth.
