1.5jz? I am going to go NA-t myself, but if I wasn't looking for 400-500 or so hp I would go 1jz. Not that the 1jz can't handle it... but the money I would spend on the 1jz swap is what I'll use to get the NA-t parts. So it was between a stock 1jz for lets say 1k-2.5k or NA-t with higher numbers for 1k-2.5k. That's just parts because labor I do myself w/ friends.

i would say if you have a reliable 2jz-ge i would turbo that. with the money i spent on the 1jz/r154 compared to a (cheap) na-t kit , I would have had more power. i think even after the the na-t kit and the electronic to tune it i would still have enough money for a decent r154 trans, pedal, and master and slave cylinders. but i made the mistake of buying a soarer clip think i could use the parts.....was wrong, it was a waste of money.

know the right people. my currect parts collection for my NA-T:
mint ct26: 150 from a friend
Greddy FMIC: 150 from a friend(super hook up)
7mgte injectors: free...parted out car
Greddy Type S BOV(real): free...stripped screw. took 10 mins to fix. saved 125 bucks
flanges and downpipe: make myself or find a buddy that welds
IC piping: make myself from free piping
SAFC2: 150
turbo manifold: 150
other small things: 100-200
all that is under a 1000 and is good for 300whp a least using decent parts.
uhm no dude. those things disintegrate if you look wrong at it one day. lol.
waste of money

I will be pulling out my 2jz-ge and my w58 selling that and dropping in my modded 2jz and my r154 once I'm closer to completing my NA-T. Use that money for a good turbo. That's also the good thing about going NA-t. You are able to prep your car and once it's ready to drop in the turbo kit.

I saw a decent turbo from some guy on NA-T or something that was ranged around 4400$. With that money I could almost have a 2jz with a 6 spd swap. Easier just to peice it together?

for under 3.5k you could easily have 400rwhp going na-t or you could spend 2.5-3k for a 1jz swap with about 250-260rwhp. I did the 1jz thing already, now im starting with a clean slate and going na-t... its really up to you. research more and you'll come up with your own answer.
