this sounds exactly like what my freinds corolla was doing.
it was one of those large transistor plugs in the engine bay.
makes a buzzing/clicking sound when its on its way out and once its gone its silent.
funny thing was it was the plug for the headlights which worked, but prevented the car from starting. I checked toyota ecu diagrams for the car and anything on the common ground line will do wierd stuff to the car.
cranking and everything else was healthy, i knew something fishy was going on cause the engine sounded like it was about to start everytime then just wouldnt actually start.
hope that helps.
im not even sure you can visually inspect the transistors.

the car did start fine once we simply unplugged the bad one. definately sounds electrical cause it should at least start and die or make really bad sounds if something mechanically is wrong.

If you have fuel.... and you have spark to all cyls..... you must have compression and or timing issue.

An engine only needs 4 things to run really. Fuel, spark, compression, and to have the three timed properlly.

I would question if the timing belt was re-installed in the right position.
