I've had to exact opposite happen to my car. When it was cool, the speedo would work but when it got too hot, it would stop. It drove me crazy. I got a check engine light for it too. It said speed sensor malfunction or something. I replaced it with a known good one and it works perfect now.

I was told that sometimes the hardware can get worn out. I did notice the last owner did something shady. Because the check engine light bulb was actually removed when I first took it out to see if I can the fix it. So maybe they could've damaged something.

speed sensor is easy to do. its one bolt and one, 3 wire?, harness clip. as far as cost dont know sorry.

to do the sensor you just have to jack up the car on one side and you will see towards the back of the trans near the tail shaft.

I didn't change the speed sensor. I was talking about the cluster itself. I just replaced it with another one.
