Default Is This a Fair Price?

Not sure if this post should be here or in Performance section but if it needs to be moved feel free Mr Moderator.

I have a 92 SC400 with 85k on it. The rear main seal is leaking and really just started after a long trip. My question is I received a quote from a Indy Lexus shop for $650 to repair. Is this a fair price? Is there anything else that should be done while that is being done that they will have access to e.g. like tranny mounts etc?

Thanks in advance.

thats about normal costs of dropping a tranny and doing basic work.
did they say how bad it was leaking?
most of the time the rear seal doesnt leak very much and you can just ignore it until you need to do tranny work. my last SC had a small rear seal leak and a slight oil pan leak, but the oil level stayed pretty much full through 3000 miles.

Hey Ali - they showed me. I cant guage it. Doesnt appear to be much but oddly wasnt leakin at all until I took it on the trip up and back from Carlisle. I looked under it yesterday and there was some oil maybe 3 x 3 inch puddle which is slowly running down the garage floor so maybe looks worse than it is.

Thanks

no problem, i would clean it up or put some cardboard down and see if it does it again. seal probably expanded a bit and contracted on the long drive. something that might go away if its just a tiny leak and wasnt leaking before.
could have something to do with the weather possibly (just guessing on this one)

you could get it fixed but most people wouldnt pay that much to just fix the rear seal until it starts to pour oil..
I know you like to have your sc running perfect though, so you could always make it worthwile by doing some other stuff when your tranny is dropped. like lets say get a dragon torque converter installed. they are pretty pricey though but they wouldnt charge you hardly anything to install if your tranny is already down.

I have the same problem and was quoted $850, to fix it. I was also told that you can just check your oil levels until I need tranny, or clutch work. Mine only leaks about 5-8 drops a day and my oil levels are always good whenever I change my oil.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I will wait and just monitor the levels. I dont want to dump that kind of money in just for a "leak" if I cant get some things for free as well.
