Default Noise when in reverse

Ok I have a little problem. When I put my car into reverse for the first time after sitting say over night I get this vibrating/grinding noise from somewhere in the front of the car. When I put it into drive it either goes away for lasts for a few seconds then goes away. It almost sounds like something is stuck under the car or something................Im at a lost. This is a 97 SC300 with 170k.

I dont know alot about the auto trannies in these cars, but some manufacturers use solenoid switches to switch the gears. Maybe something to look into?

is your car in full stop when you tried to put it in reverse? most likely your syncros are done if it is.

Yes it is in full stop when I put it into reverse. It seems to only happen when sitting for a long time, then it does not do it again

it would be more cost efficient to just replace it. Sometimes the tranny needs to "warm up", but it really shouldnt happen, before you dump it out, i recommend trying thicker tranny fluid, it will minimize it.

Its funny you say that it should warm up because today when it is 100 degrees out it did not do it at all
