Default 91 SC400 Coolant level Rises and Falls FAST???

OK,

we likely need a new water pump, as it growls and appears to leak.

The weird thing is that the fluid level in the holding tank rises and falls when the growl starts and stops.

The water pumps that I have seen have no clutch. It sort of sounds like a A/C clutch when it engages, and that's when the fluid level falls.

Anyway, thanks for all your helpful comments! Sofi loves this SC400

I had a similar problem as you did, but it originiated from having a leaky radiator. I installed a Fluydine radiator, and had a leaky nut on the bottom. When I corrected that problem, I had a jumping temp needle. It ended up being an air bubble in the coolant system. I removed the rad. top, jacked the car up a bit so that that was the highest point in the system. Ran the car for a bit until I could see almost not fluid, dropped the car and filled her back up. Was perfect after that

Give it a shot, its probably a bubble in the system.

A growl? Hmm sounds like a dying water pump to me. How many miles are on her? And the last time the water pump was replaced?

yep, it is likely a spun water pump. It just seemes like the water pump has a clutch, and engages like an a/c pump. But more likely, there is air in the system, and the engaging and grinding is when the pump is actually working. The car has about 150,000 miles on it, and I have no idea when the water pump was last changed.
