Honestly, keep saving. If you are planning on going NA-T (naturally aspirated turbo) make sure everything in the motor is in tip top shape. Timing belt, water pump, ignition system, just to name a few. Pick a goal that you want to reach horsepower wise and go from there. Start collecting parts, or save it all up and buy the whole turbo kit and the necessary parts at once. You should also check out www.clubna-t.com .
Another route is doing a motor swap. Really the most affordable is the 1jzgte, it seems like the average is around $1500 for the motor. There is also the 2jzgte swap as another option but that is more expensive.
If forced induction is not in your future, there are a number of things you could do, if you want to keep it naturally aspirated. If you have an automatic transmission a higher stall torque converter will help out alot of the line. Search for BFI(big friggin intake), that is the best intake setup for our cars. I know Xerd and some other companies (can't think of them) make headers for the SC300. Couple the headers with a fully redone exhaust with mandrel bent piping, high flow cats and that will really open her up. If you have a manual transmission a lightened flywheel will help out alot.
Just think in the long run about the parts you buy. No point in buying a Xerd Header if you are going NA-T down the road.
Feel free to ask questions, I'm in a helping mood tonight lol

I think everybody has to start somewhere... event if you are not fast right now ... if you want to be fast later your car will need handeling and break
so you can always buy big brake kit (ls400 or supratt).. suspension, wheels.
but if you want to start to put your cash on the engine to go fast keep your cash and wait to have more to do something that will make your car fast

well I had about $1,500 that I was going to spend on suspension, or exhaust, or some upgrade, but then my timing belt broke....so I might save some of that money and make sure the car is running smoothly before you start trying to squeeze horses out of it.
