~~~ W58 Swap Or Rebuild Auto ??? !!! ~~~
Hey guys,
SO, I will be rebuilding my engine soon to handle around 500hp all day long.
NOW, my transmission has 210k miles (A LOT) and they are only supposed to hanlde around 400hp.
BUT, w58 trannys are also only supposed to handle 400hp... so what do i do?
And no, the r154 is just to much money...
Keep in mind cost, how much would it cost to rebuild to stock tranny and add a higher torque converter vs swapping to a w58?
Whats cheaper/better ? (considering i have to rebuild the stock sc400 auto tranny to be somewhat more reliable)
If you can afford a r154 dont bother about 500 hp .a built auto or w58 wont hold up .In the long run the built auto will cost about the same price as a r154
Seriously!! Dont slack on the trans. Both autos the A340 and A341 will fail sooner or later, and so will the W58. Hell, my friend mark just lost his W58 and he's only a BPU supra.. STOCK twins at like 400rwhp.
The only options you really have to "handle 500rwhp daily" and be reliable is a stock R154, Stock V160, or a TH400. The R154 is the easiest and cheapest out of the three. Dont waste your money on a soarer R154 because an mk3 supra R154 can be modified EASILY to work. Should only cost you about $1500 all together and thats if you have nothing to start from.
Costs
Well, considering costs, what do you think would be the aprox. cost of all three (talking on a budget).
- w58 ~$1,200 ~400hp
- Rebuild stock tranny plus modified torque converter ~$?? ~450hp?
- R154 ~$?? ~A LOT hp
An r154 for $1300 ?!? Every post that I have read has them upwards of $2,000 ... why?!!
If anyone here has done the conversion, how much did it cost you? Of course I would go the r154 route if thats the price!
It all depends on the prices you find. Of course u will need to find pedals, slave cylinder, clutch kit. But I mean for someone like myself, I have an extra R154 laying around, an extra drive shaft, so I would cut that cost down quite a bit. $500 for an R154 may be hit or miss.. it all depends who you get it from.
