Some new issues with the arrival of cold weather...
hey guys,
now that winter is coming, the SC400 is showing some new issues.
a) starting the engine cold causes it to run VERY rich. like, i mean ridiculously rich. the exhaust STINKS of gasoline... so much that you can smell it in the car.
is that normal? if not, what can i do to fix it?
b) the heating is acting funny. i don't know how to diagnose the problem. basically, i get nice heat when the car is in motion, but when i stop at a red light, the air coming out of the vents gets less hot... almost cold.
what does this mean, and how is it fixed?
thanks guys!!!

The coolant levels are for your second question about what's up with your Heat. About the first part... at least with my knowledge set, it's unrelated to the running rich question. Anyone?

thanks for the suggestions guys.
i'm bringing the car into my garage at work (i've got space in the back to pull the car in and work on it... garage at home is full of my parent's ****!) in the next few days for an oil change. gonna vacuum the car real good and put in winter mats while i'm at it. also got me a cabin air filter from a denso dealer on ebay. gonna try installing it while i've got the car in.
i guess while i'm at it, i'll see if the coolant levels are good. maybe i'll dump it and put some new coolant in too. gonna pull the plugs and have a look at them, see how they are.
what's a cold start injector?

To answer your first question, I believe the ECU runs the car rich on startup for about 30 seconds. To my knowledge this is normal. If it continues to do this you may have an issue, get your compression checked.

Simply Stunning
The ECU runs the car rich until it reaches operating temperature. The "Cold Start" injectors you speak of are not different injectors, but just more fuel going through the regular ones than normall would be at that RPM and Load.
If your coolant was not doing its job and heating up to quickly, then your car would not run rich much at all. The ECU also leans out the mixture as the temperature rises to avoid knock. Also, what AFRs are you seeing? If you do not have a wideband O2 sensor hooked up and reading your AFRs, how do you know it's running rich?
Bring your car to a real mechanic and let them diagnose the problem.

well it doesn't really matter any more at this point, because the car was written off.
i was in an accident with it last week and i got word from the insurance company today that it is being written off. the damages exceed the value of the vehicle.
