The bellhousing for an r154 is different as well, it has holes so you can unbolt the clutch pressure plate. The slave cylinder is different, and if you took a pic of the other side, you could tell by the speed sensor.

I figured it out about an hour after my original post.
It's hard to tell at first, but after about 2 hours of research, the differences became glaring. The position of the shifter outlet was what originally threw me off. But there are like 4 shifter positions for W58s.
But the dead ringer was the shape of the rear half of the transmission. The R154 has a more compressed section with ribs, the W58 is larger and smooth.

just to confirm this a picture of the old clutch in the car.
to me looks like a 2jzge non turbo/7mge non turbo push type clutch. and flywheel needed for the pressure plate to mount to would be for the same application 2jzge/7mge.
