Cali OBD1 SC300's also have a third O2 sensor which pretty much verifies the system is working. I own a Cali SC300 and I also have to deal with their smog again when I move back soon. The ticking is normal but eventually we will all need to replace these things. Catco makes a Cali legal second cat for obd1 cars: Model #66266.

in California would you be able to get away with just putting 1 cat in the exhaust (just the mid-pipe) ?
instead of having one at the down-pipe and one mid?

(in a OBD1)

Just saw this and realized we continued this conversation in your newer thread. As mentioned there, however... no you can't do that in Cali. Doesn't matter if it's a Federal to Cali SC300. All existing emissions equipment that the car originally came with have to stay on it. You DON'T, however, have to use a Cali-model cat if you own a Federal SC300. More cat options for Federal cars.
