R154 Transmission question
Hey guys I have done some searching but dont have a definate conclusion.
1. Did the R154 trannys ever come in the US supra's?
2. What 1JZGTE Swaps from japan include the R154??
3. Can I buy any 1JZGTE Swap from japan with a 5 speed manual tranny and know it will be a R154 or did they make others for the turbo charged cars there?

For the shifter location to be correct in an SC300 requires an R154 transmission from a Chaser (JZX90/JZX100) or Soarer (JZZ30). These transmissions are almost impossible to find in the states. The Supra (JZA70) tranny will work with modification and is much more readily available.

exactly what he said.
all turbo 1j motors used the R154 because it could handle higher amounts of power than it's partner in crime the W58. R154's aren't too hard to find, but finding them from chasers and soarers can be a little challenging. The supra one will work, but without proper modification shifting will be a little strange.

There are a couple pictorial accounts of this by other members:
Solution to soarer r154
R154 shifter extension mod writeup w/ PICS !
The JZZ30 w/R154 engine set would be ideal since it came from the same vehicle, but the JZA70 w/154 (ie. JDM Supra) would be the next best thing since they are easy to find and the transmission can be modified to work.

ok so im trying to get this straight. the R154 out of a Chaser (JZX90 or JZX100) will fit into an Sc300 with a 1JZ with no modifications. correct? i read somewhere else that the shifter would still have to be modified.

The JZA70 and MA70 R154 from the Supra are the R154's that require linkage assemblies to be modified.
A7 trannies are common. Z3 and X9/X10 trannies are tough to find. If you have found one, tell me before you buy it so that I can!

ok thanks. now i know for sure what to look for. i just wanted to make sure before i went and bought the wrong tranny.
ive read a lot of threads about this, but i just saw another that said it would need to be modified, but whoever said it must have been confused or something.
thanks for the info.
