Default Timing belt.

ok well my brother and dad just got a quote to replace the timing belt at this one shop..

they said i believe $1900 for the labor and parts

$200 the rebuild the power steering..

and yea.

are those good prices? cuz i think they are ripping us off.. but im not to sure..

power steering wise im going to see if i can do that myself.. buy the new seal kit from lexus and yea.. Tut.

That's a bit high, although I bet there are dealers out there that charge that much. You may be able to get it for under $1000 at an independant shop.

Be sure that you really need the change the belt- they last a long time, way beyond the recommended factory change interval. There's plenty more details on this issue if you care to search.

The dealer did my timing belt and water pump for under $1000, so $1900 seems too pricey.

For that amount of money, you could purchase the service manuals, all tools and parts needed to complete the job yourself. You'll even have money left over to complete most other engine service. Get your dad and brother to help. My 2c.

already got the service manual (both). and i dont want to mess things up since this is the daily driver.. and i have school.. so knowing me .. if WE did it itll talk a week maybe. hah

im saying if i did the work myself. hah

but ive been reading around.. some placed can do it for $490 for labor. sounds pretty good.

but yea.. gotta work on these stuff..

Timing belt
Water pump
Valve cover gasket
Power steering pump
drive belt
ac compressor
ac pipe

n a lil bit more.

im going to do this at my uncles shop. since he replaced the timing belt for the sc before. so yea.

well just and update if anyone wants to know...

just changed the timing belt. 3 of the pullies. drive belt.. water pump..

n yea.. OMFG its a lot of freaken work! i was helping my uncle and theres so many things you gotta remove.. but yea.. i dont feel anything different in the car yet..

You'll feel it later when the timing belt doesn't break on you, leaving you stranded.

i think it took us about 4 hours or so..

my uncle has all the tool in his home garage.. air tool n such. and yea

hmm time to flush the coolant now.. since he mixed tap water with my distilled/coolant stuff.

now gotta fix the power steering.. Need that seal kit.

just wondering.. does the gasket kit for the power steering come with ALL the O rings and stuff?

Is it ok to let the timing belts break in the 400? I mean if it does break everything stops right?

Depends on the year of the sc400. The earlier models are non-interference and the later models are interference. If the timing belt breaks while driving on a non-interference model, it will not harm the engine. Interference timing belts will hurt the engine. I forget which years are which, but do a search since I remember a topic on this before.
