I know this has probably be asked, but I'm just wondering on personal choice or in general which one is generally better. Reason I'm asking is because I already have a R154 and about to order a W58 on monday full swap. This would be going in a SC400 so, just looking for some input.

The W58 can only handle around 400hp-450hp aswell. I've always read the the R154 is stronger then the W58.

BTW IDK if you remember me but we talked a bit at the dyno day at corr, my boss is the the one with the blue is300-T

Nope right now I have a stock tranny in it with a 2800rpm stall converter. I tore up the last built tranny I had in it.

I am looking at installing a built A340 with a 3K rpm stall converter which is the supra auto. This particular tranny was built for a race car so it is manual shift only

to answer the OP's question, the w58 wont handle as much power as the r154, the w58 is only good for 400-450 and might be pushing it, if you dont plan on having huge amounts of power then the w58 is fine but if you want an assload of power go for the r154. ad since you already have the stronger of the two you might as well see if you can get just the motor without the w58 and try to save some money

The R154 also came in the MKIII and I personally know someone pushing 6XXHP through his with no problems. I got lucky and found a soarer R154 they are very rare I've only seen 4 in the last year for sale including the one I got.

I did a lot of research on the w58 in turbo applications. The consensus is that with the SC300/SC400 cars, the w58 will handle 400rwhp all day long. All it requires is good transmission fluid, proper maintenance, and proper shifting, i.e. no stupid abuse. The w58 5 speed trans shifts a LOT smoother than the R154 too. Also, something to keep in mind is 400rwhp on a SC car with the NA final drive ratio makes for a VERY quick street car that will accelerate faster than most cars on the street. just my $0.02.

Well the car is going to be street driven it's going to be a single turbo SC400, I just want to make sure I'm gonna use the right on and not kill it. I'm only really looking in the range of 500whp. Which ever one i don't use on the SC in going in the 86. So it looks like the R154 is the route to go, and use the W58 else where.

And I remember you DriftNsc3, I wish the GS would have been running right so I could have gotten the real numbers.

why would you single turbo a V8?!

oh and good luck on the R154 swap, took me a year of research and $2500+ to complete this project.

Hey cherplex, wondering if the weight difference (if any) between the SC300 and the MKIII might be helping that situation.

It's not a small turbo let's just say that, and I got the R154 free from on of my friends with a MKIII. So some of my cost is gone there

There's a guy on supraforums that regularly drag raced his 2JZ truck making 650+ rwhp and his w58 transmissions help up fine. The fact that his truck was lighter than a full weight luxury car enabled his w58's to last longer. AE86 is lighter than our cars, so w58 should handle plenty of power in that scenario. Just some food for thought, a local supra na-t guy road raced his supra regularly and was making 436rwhp with w58 trans and had no problems in his full weight mkiv supra. Shifting properly and not abusing the trans is why his is lasting so long.
