I live in a rural area now that doesnt host a lexus dealer! I try and do most of the major maintanence myself , but today I took my sc400 to a muffler shop so that they could fix my rattling cats. It is going to cost $700 and up, he knows no other options, he said that he was scared to work on my car! What do I do? I was going to hollow out the 2 preconverters myself, and leave the one big cat alone and keep the resonator and mufflers. Will my check engine light come on? How loud will the car be? Can you partially hollow out the pre cats?

Thanks for the help! you guys have saved me alot of money in the past, and I mean ALOT!

Go to another shop!!!

Any borderline competent mechanic/welder should be able to cut out the old cat and put in an aftermarket replacement. Should be no more than $200-$250.

Tell this guy to pound salt!

if u live in a a area with no smog laws i would run 2 resonators in place of your cats any competent welder with a mig can do this with mild steel. id say dont pay more than 250 including new cats.
