Default Is NOS harmful? And how much can my SC handle?

How much HP worth of NOS or zex do you think my sc400 can handle without the engine being harmed at all? Or is that even possible for it not to hurt the stock engine? From what I've gathered my V-8 should be able to take 75-100 HP without problem. Is this true? Thanks, Adam

Yep- 75-100 shot is about all you can do if the motor is stock.

I'm pretty sure if you ran a wet kit instead of a dry kit like the Zex, you could run a 125hp shot on a 400 series engine

Supposed to be able to run a 100hp shot on a 300 series; of course the 300 is built a lot stronger, but the 400 is still a lot bigger

Everything depends on installation and responsible use. If you installed it right, and keep everything maintained, you should have no abnormal wear w/ NOS.

Over 75-100 shot, you need to consider intake and exhaust mods and an upgraded fuel system; cooler plugs, etc.

Keith I thought that was a given

Yeah definitely get an exhaust and intake

You can run a 100hp shot just fine and your motor will be perfectly fine as long as you install the kit right and don'tdo anything stupid... like bang off the rev limiter while under the spray, etc

Me too, but I've learned to never ***/u/me anything now a days.
abutler696 quoted as saying "stock", so I took it literally.

I'd rather insult someones intelligence that have them screw up their car because of a communication gap.

And good advice on the rev limiter - seen someone do it before......several times. Still didn't seem to learn his lesson. Stupid corvette owners! hehehehe

I can guarantee you that the 1uz-fe can handle a hell of a lot more than a 100hp shot if you feed it enough fuel with the proper timing retard and exhaust in place. That engine is just as over-built as the 2jz....

I am using my 97 SC300 to see how big a shot the 2jz-ge will handle before I swap in my built 2jz-gte.

Oh so is that one your drag car? I hear rumors of your car all the way from over there man...

Rednecks come up and ask me about your car all the time because they keep seeing the videos hehe...

I heard you were building up your current ride as a near drag car... I guess I know the answer to that now

Let us know your results... my wet kit should be in any day now... Is a 100shot ok with the stock pump and stock exhaust and open intake? Or should I stick with a 50-75shot and get a cat-back first?

Just wondering

Bean, tough call. A 100 shot should work, but if it were me, I'd jet it at 75, run it for a while and make sure everything is working fine. If so, carefully drop in the 100 jets. Good luck man. You'll love it. The timing adjustments need to be pretty precise, so be patient and make sure its done right the first time.

Yea, 75 is the most I'd go on a stock exhaust. A cat back really doesn't open it up too much so It isn't worth the $$$$ unless you piece together a custom setup. Its the cats that really need opening for over 100 shot. Some hi-flow cats are available, but I haven't used them recently so I don't know whats good or not.

You sure about that? I know the cat removal idea is the norm for 13b motors, but I dunno about pistons

I know my 300zx could have taken a 125hp wet shot if I wanted with the stock cats... I'd think the SC300 could take the nearly the same, I just want to stay decently safe...

Are the cats on this car THAT restrictive?

Cats on ANY car are restrictive. If you have to pass a sniffer, get the hi-flow cats, if not then yank em'. The hi-flows are the best thing once you start having an engine that can flow more air. The excessive heat from the NOS will just fry the stock cats over time and cause them to break apart and clog. I see alot of people w/ backed up mufflers that are filled w/ cat internals (on piston engines). I'm sure there are many people out there running a 125 shot w/ factory cats w/o much problems, but the potential is there and the risk is high. I'm just not willing to take that risk. I promised myself I'd keep my Lex for reliability, and I assume most on this board agree, so thats why I offer that advice.

How does the I6 sound without cats? I don't want the exhaust note to be blatty... a cat-back allows a very smooth mean growl but no resonation or buzzing...

In other words, I don't want my exhaust note to sound like ***
