Default Manual Trans Whine???

OK so I have a '94 5Spd that is really starting to give me a headache. My problem is that in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear my trans sounds like it has straight cut gears. Then on top of that it doesn't want to go into gear 1st as smooth as it should (takes some force and down shifting is kinda impossible) Which is annoying becuase I have no idea what it might be. I have swapped out the fluid and I don't think that is it. I'm thinking that after all this time in trying to find a 5spd, I have found the biggest peice of junk. I think my trans is on it's way out.

Is it true that most W58s exhibit this whine over time? Does anybody have a higher mileage W58 without the whine?

155k+ miles here with double the stock torque going thru it and no whine.

Put oil in it.

A friend experienced this same issue with his EVO after a hard launch that got some wheelhop... sounded like straight cut gears 1-2... When he had it rebuilt, one of the important gears had been ground down, and was not making 100% contact with the other gears... he had to have the trans rebuilt and the necessary stuff replaced...
