Hey guys,
My 92 SC400 stated overheating today. It only overheats when is idling (such as in the garage, red light, or anywhere I have to stop). The needle slowly starts moving toward the red until I start driving. As soon as I start driving the needle instantly goes back to normal. Anyone know what may be going on? Fan fluid looks okay. I'm afraid it’s my water pump but then wouldn't it always overheat? I don't know, anyone’s help would be great.

i had a problem like this and it ended up being my rad. hoses...once i replaced those all went away..i donno..its a cheap thing to try (and fast) before replacing anything expensive and doesnt hurt to change em either..

ooo good i need to try that, i have the same problem when i stop at a traffic light i see the temp guage start rising really fast. then when i start goin it stops rising ad even drops a little.

A partically clogged radiator is common in Arizona if tap water is used in the system.

So we spent about four hours this morning with the car and I its fixed now. First we took off the thermostat, it looked to be in great condition but we already bought a new one so I replaced it anyways. That didn't help. The car kept overheating after about ten minutes on idling. And I forgot to mention in my original post that my heater wasn't blowing hot air either. So we decided to drain the radiator and flush it. After about three drains we filled it up with antifreeze (toyota factory red) and now everything seems to be working fine. Car isn't overheating and heater is blowing hot air. My guess is that there wasn't enough coolant in the system because we put more in than original came out. Its all fine now but where did the coolant go? And why? Guess I'll just drive it and see what happens. Thanks for everyone’s help.

maybe you have a slow leak..thats why i replaced my hoses only before doing all the big stuff..i think that my lower rad. hose was leaking and eventually it made my coolant low...glad you fixed it
