Water pump blew chunks, need advise (Phoenix)
I noticed my temp guage shot to red in about 5 seconds, I pulled over and found coolant leaking from bottom part of the engine. I assume my water pump is hosed. It looks like more work than I am willing to do on my own. What should this cost me? The car is probably worth $3k at most, 92 SC4 with 215k miles. If anyone is in the Phoenix area can you recommend a shop.
Thanks,
Thanks,

Hey what's up, I had a similar situation happen. I have a 5sp Sc300, I'm not sure how similar the setup is. But I tried to do it myself with someone helping, but it was a bit too complicated. I have a cousin that's a mechanic, but I checked a few places in NY Strauss/Pep Boys. They wanted 600-800 for the job.

what is is with all of us in Phoenix having overheating problems lately during the winter? I just had an overheating issue with my SC and thank god it wasn't the water pump, just low coolant.

Phoenix having overheating problems lately during the winter?
Only thing I can suspect is that the coolant expands during the summer heat and when the winter comes it will be low and could overheat.
Check your coolant I guess!

gn3, I just lost mine too. What did you end up doing / paying. My 1st quote from an independent mech was $$600. It appears to be pretty involved so I'm not sure I want to attempt it myself.

It's not that cold here in Phx for the winter (40 - 70s), I don't know why the rash of pumps on this thread. The temperature change throughout the year is probably comparable to yours on the east coast, just obviously on a higher part of the scale. Maybe the 113 degree summer days are just stressing our systems (and the cars ) so the pump is tired. I know it rots all my bushings.
1JZ300, thanks, I'm going to try and get through the holidays first, then figure out what to do with it. (myself or a mech)

Your water pump must have a drinking problem...The only way not to blow chunks is not to drink...That was kinda of a dud...My bad...
The water pumps go out on these heaps from time to time...It's to be expected, change the water pump, flush the fluid and be done with it...

GN3, did you get it fixed? Mech or yourself?
I called toyota/scion on Frank Loyd wright and was quoted 300 for timing belt and change and was told they would change the water pump for just the price of the pump so maybe around 500. Then about an hour later that person's manager calls me back and jacked the price up over 1200. Saying I needed to change all these other things as well. Now the original owner was an older female who didn't seem like she would take the car over 60. And all I;ve used it for is for daily driving to work for the past year. I have a '93 with about 130000mi and am wanting to sell it. Do I really need to replace everything in there?
