Default 95 sc400 lunges when dropped into d or r

I bought this car about 2 weeks ago...and it runs great shifts smoothly.. but when you first put it into d or r in tries to lunge forward.. or backward..I guesss what im saying is if you are parked and you do from p to d then n then r .. you can really feel it shifting.... I checked tranny fluid level and its about an inch higher on the stick than where it should be hot or cold how bad is this ... I have 170k on the odo and a slooooow trany fluid leak maybe from the torque converter.. Do you think someone over filled it for a reason unknown to me or should i get under there and drain some to get the right level..
Any opinions appreciated..
