Default Time it takes for overheating to cause damage to motor?

A few weeks ago, my bro helped swaped out my motor for a new one because of a bad head gasket. After we test drove it and came back home, the car started overheating. I was on the passenger side so I didn't see the gauge. My bro said that he saw the needle reached the "H' right before shut off the engine.

We just added more coolant and that took care of the overheating problem but my question is how long does it take for the engine to overheat to cause damage(s) to the engine? In other words, will it damage my new engine if the needle touched the "H' right before we shut off the car?

Also, after he shut off the car he left the key in the on position and put on the heater full blast and added coolant and waited for the engine to cool down. After reaching normal temps, we test drove it again with A/C on and it never overheated again.

I'm just paranoid and would like to know. So far, the car has run great and had no problems (knock on wood).

You should be fine. I had this problem a year ago. My car overheated daily for about 2 weeks...I finally brought a factory thermostat and the car has been running great.

h is what 260*? you should be fine under most conditions if you only did it for mere seconds or a minute. A coolant/water mix should be able to reach anywhere from 260-280 minimum before evaportating depending on coolant/water ratio.

Gaskets can stand 280 and so can the internals. If ti was prolonged and the cooland started gassing(thereby giving you effectively 0 cooling), then you got a problem, if it was jsut overheating for a little while, then you should be fine.

The 2Jz is a stout motor. But it takes only 1 time overheated for damage to occur. How bad it is, well, that remains to be seen. Regardless, overheating is not good.
